Why do my male rats smell so much?

Are they neutered? Some male rodents give off an awful smell when they mark their territory, as i have experienced before. I heard getting them neutered can take care of that, but you may not want to, for its a very dangerous operation with any rodent. Sorry I can't tell you more, that's very odd.
