Why did the ANC remove Jan Smuts's name from so many landmarks in South Africa?

The farm child who grew to be a national hero of both world wars, Prime Minister of South Africa, and in his last years Chancellor of Cambridge University--I personally consider him the greatest South African who ever lived, greater than Mandela, Tambo or other ANC thugs.
