The Holocaust: Is it true some of the ged were not Jews?

So, I was watching the news the other day about the Auschwitz sign being stolen and the reporter was saying that MOST of the people ged were Jewish, so then I began to wonder, if most were Jewish, then what were the others? And why were they ged?
