I have a 97 vulcan that dies when put in 1st gear?

Melinda, I can not think of any reason that a motor cycle engine would stop, when put it in gear, unless, 1. there is a safety. switch, wired to the engine, or 2. you have a grabbing clutch, and you are not give it enough throttle to keep it running. 3 Some other reason for the engine to stop running. the new motors are electric start, try start it in gear, even 2, or 3, with the clutch disengage it will not move. if the engine will not start, then there is a other reason or a safety switch, if ti start and trys to move it is a out of adjustment clutch. if it start and just sit there. shift back to first and see what happen, If non of the above happen check for loose wires, are a gas stoppage,
