Why among Asian film makers is Satyajit Ray not as highly rated as Edward Yang or Wong Kar-Wai?
Ray's movies have been set in rural India (I believe Bengal though I am not sure about it.) in the 1950's. So as many criticise he tried to glorify poverty is purely illogical as rural India was primarily poor then. Moreover many of his films especially The 'Apu' Trilogy, 'Charulata', 'Agantuk' were rivetting poignant portrayal of human beings. He is as real to his craft as Ozu. In fact I would say after the Japanese masters if you look into Asian cinema the first name you look at will be Ray.
